Watsonville is a town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It was established on May 18, 1847 by Capt. George A. Smith and his wife Mrs. Martha C. Watson. By 1870 there were 6 businesses operating in what is now downtown Watsonville including 3 hotels (the Hotel de Anza (1872),the Hotel California (1877) and the San Francisco Palace (1880)), 2 breweries (the Redwood Brewery (?,1871)and Pacific Brewing Company (?,1875)), 3 stores (Lodge Hardware Company (?,1850; Wamsutta & Sons Co.(?1901)), 4 churches ([The Methodist Episcopal Church (?1902), [The Catholic Apostolic Church] (=1905), [St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church]) and 1 school ([John Fertilizer School]). The population reached 20,000 by 1880 but declined to 10,000 by 1920 due to both World War I and World War II.[2] Watsonville has been home to several notable people throughout its history including: Apple Inc.'s co-founder Steve Jobs,[3] entrepreneur Marc Benioff,[4] Mayor Donny Weingarten[5][6], author Barbara Kingsolver,[7][8][9][10], historian Richard Slotkin[11] and architect Frank Gehry.[12]. Today it continues to be an important cultural center with many events taking place such as arts festivals[13] and music festivals.[14][15].

In 1916, the United States Coast Guard Station Watsonville was established here and it remained operational until 1966.
