Watsonville is a small town located in Monterey County, California. The population was 1,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas-Monterey-Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watsonville was founded in 1847 by Captain John Leland and his family, who named it after Sir Francis Burdett Watkins, an English gentleman who had been dispatched to explore the area. The first post office was established in 1848. In 1852, the community became a city under the leadership of Mayor Henry Worthy and City Councilman James Fenton. In 1865, Watsonville annexed neighboring towns of Anza and Solano to become its own municipality. As a result of this annexation, Watsonville became one of only four California cities with full city rights and powers from inception to dissolution (the others being San Francisco,Oakland (Alameda County), and Berkeley). On July 15th 1886, due to resident efforts at reviving agriculture within their town limits through various land grants totaling over 180 acres (65 hectares), the Town Council voted 7-2 to annex Rancho Santa Fe also situated inside present-day Watsonville limits. The incorporation process for both villages took place concurrently; however because ranchoSantaFe had no designated school district or water supply system within its boundaries there were few students attend either village’s classes during their early years.
