The Coast Guard Station Watsonville was founded in 1915 as part of the predecessor to the present day California National Guard. The station was first manned by a detachment of naval personnel and it was during World War I when the Coast Guard began its role in providing coastal security. It was not until 1949 that the Coast Guard Station Watsonville became an active duty military installation with a civilian workforce. Control of the station passed from civilian hands to the military following the Korean War. In 1978, control of the facility shifted back to civilians after years of service by Military Personnel Command (MPC) troopers and guardsman from nearby Monterey, San Francisco, and other parts of California. Watsonville, California is a small town in San Mateo County, California. The population was 5,788 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The first people to live in Watsonville were the Ohlone people who arrived in approximately 2,500 BC. In 1853, landowner John Atherton sold most of his holdings in the area to Frédéric-Victor Chardonnet and his wife Eugenie Bénigne de laRoche for $2,000. They named their new development after Lord Byron's birthplace - Villa Stratholme in Scotland - but it did not become a reality until 1860 when they made an agreement with David Winton to build them a "château" (a mansion). The town was platted by Captain George Hahn and Jens Christensen on December 3, 1871 as part of Rancho Livermore Grant No. 11 for $5 peracre (0.40 acres = 100 ha). In 1914–15, Atherton donated land to establish what would become Stanford University; Watsonville voted on November 15th, 1915 to create its own City Council which met at his home until 1925 when office space became available at City Hall. On January 14th 1934 Mayor Harry Sanger dedicated the new Administration Building which sat at Seventh and Mission Streets adjacent to Hoover Institution now known as Stanford University campus. On July 16th 1938 Commodore James Prentice developed Naval Air Station North Island which included much of what is now Watsonville including some homes that still stand today such as Mrs Ethel Moller's home #619 on Harrison Avenue just south of I-280 exit 219A (now occupied by Kaiser Aluminum). Today that area includes part of Palo Alto and several other neighborhoods close by including Menlo Park & Redwood Shores

Watsonville is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It was founded on October 7, 1879 by George A. Watson and his wife Emma. The original population of the town was only eighty-eight people. Today, Watsonville has a population of over 10,000 residents and is the largest town in San Mateo County by area. Watsonville begins its history as a small agricultural community located just south of San Francisco on the east side of Highway 101. In 1879, George A. Watson purchased farmland near present-day Watsonville from Manuel Nieto and began to develop it into a small village with two stores and one schoolhouse. The name "Watsonville" was chosen because it resembled the sound of an American cannon shot according to one account.[1] The first post office was established at Watsonville on November 15, 1880,[2] and the first store opened for business on December 5th.[3] By 1886, there were six businesses in operation in what is now known as downtown Watsonville: two general stores, two harness shops (later converted into restaurants),[4] and three blacksmiths/carpenters (later converted into dwellings). The only other industry then existing in downtown Watsonville was agriculture; however, this changed with the opening of Northern Pacific Railroad's line through town linking it with nearby Menlo Park and Palo Alto.[5][6][7] This new railroad broughtforth massive development opportunities for downtown WatsonVILLE including many new buildings being erected such as banks (the First National Bank built in 1888,[8]), churches (St John's Episcopal Church built in 1889,[9]), schools (Lutheran School District No 1 built in 1892,[10]) factories (Ford Motor Company built their plant on Fourth Street between Market and Battery Streets in 1901)[11], hotels[12], vehicle manufacturing plants[13], auto dealership districts[14], medical practices[15],[16],[17],[18],[19],[20] as well as 400 acres ( sixteen hectares) of open land which became known as "The Apple orchard".[21][22][23] At its peak during World War I., downtown Wattvillites had over 2 thousand occupants who employed up to fifty men total [*]
Watsonville was founded by the brothers George and Isaac Watson in 1836. The original site of the town was on a small island in the San Francisco Bay, east of what is now downtown Berkeley. In 1839, the Watson brothers developed a plan for an expanded settlement on land that would become downtown Watsonville. They named their new community after John Sutter, who had founded Sacramento in 1846. The town's first post office was established in 1840. By 1861, Watsonville had grown to include a railroad station and about 100 homes. It became a suburb of San Francisco until annexed by Berkeley in 1967.
