It was called the “Gift for Man” store and sold items such as tools, clothing, and household items. In 1886, a man named John Biegler opened a grocery store in the town and began selling giftables such as candles, chocolates, and hats. From here on out, the town’s commercial growth continued until World War II when it all came to an end due to the war. However, since then there have been sporadic attempts at having another store open up in Watsonville but they have all failed. The only exception is a new grocery store that is currently being built on First Street which will open up in 2020. There are several reasons why gift for man has been so popular throughout history. One reason is that it allows people from different backgrounds to come together and share experiences or goods with one another. Watsonville was founded in 1849 by John Sutter and his brother David Sutter as an agricultural outpost on the north bank of the San Pablo Bay. The name "Watsonville" is derived from British explorer James Cook's account of his visit to that bay in 1778. In 1881, A William H. Freeman purchased land at the mouth of Coyote Creek from Mission San Miguel de Arroyo and began to placer mine gold there. In 1892, Jens Jensen discovered oil shale buried beneath Coyote Creekbeds and drilled wells there for oil production; this led to increased development around theoyle with new roads, homes, businesses, schools and factories coming into operation over time. Today Watsonville remains a small town with close-knit community ties although its economy has changed dramatically since it first developed as an agricultural center centuries ago

Watsonville is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 22,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Watsonville was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 8, 1542. He named it La Navidad and reported finding "an excellent harbor" there. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776 by Franciscans seeking to establish Christianity in this newly discovered land north of Mexico City. In 1821, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Cruz to José Joaquín Cámpora and his brother Mariano Castro who laid out a townsite on 127 acres (50 hectares). Josefina Cámpora built a whitewashed adobe house which became one of the most prominent buildings in Watsonville. José Ignacio Moreno also developed some property here including Moreno's Bank which still stands today as one of the oldest bank branches west of the Rockies. A post office called Watsonville opened in 1827 and remained in operation until 1892 when it was moved to Petaluma. Watsonville experienced great growth during its early years as an agricultural community with fruit trees, dairy products and other goods being produced for sale or consumption within miles of where they were grown. One notable factor that contributed to this growth was easy access to water from mountain ranges surrounding the town site- making irrigation possible for such an arduous task back then! Around 1901 John Muir visited and praised local farmers for their produce he found available "in every direction". Muir helped create an appreciation for agriculture among Americans which led directly to increased production throughout much of America during the Progressive Era! In 1912 Mayor George Dennison established city hall here at 505 State Street after moving from downtown San Francisco due to lack of space inside City Hall at Sutter Street! By 1930 new housing developments had replaced many old farmhouses around town center with handsome brick houses typical of Marin County during that time period! Election Day 1920 saw more than 50 people turn out into polling places across rural Marin County - turnout reached over 80% on election days statewide that year! Voter registration lists from 1920 show numerous names such as "Alice Smith", "Johnnie Shriver" and even "Fanny Bolton" (the wife of former Secretary-General James Fenton Bolton!). Political activity began becoming more organized after World War I with locals forming clubs and organizations like the American Legion Auxiliary Committee (now known as Golden Gate Park District) which served residents well into the 30s through 40s thanks largely to Reverend Harry Bridges who ran it from 1951-1957! Many interesting events took place here during those years including dances thrown by ladies auxiliary committees sponsored by churches like Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church; golf tournaments hosted by Lions Club; baseball games played at Recreation Field against visiting teams from neighboring cities; fires set off during kitesurfing races held at Point Reyes National Seashore; demonstrations against natural gas drilling operations conducted near State Beach; pajamas nightime Parade... The list goes on and on!!! In fact so much happened here throughout these decades that few if any records remain!! Watsonville was founded in 1847 by George Watson and his wife Eliza. The town was named for Capt. John Watson, who had been a part of the California Gold Rush. The first post office was established in 1849. In 1859, the town became an incorporated municipality. In 1957, it merged with nearby San Bruno to form the city of San Bruno.
