Watsonville is a town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 8,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watsonville was founded by Captain James Waddell in 1853 and named after his friend George Hutton Watson. The first coffee beans were grown in nearby San Lorenzo Valley in 1859. A post office called Watsonville was established in 1866, and the town took its name from its original namesake. In 1886, local resident Hiram Maxim started a large-scale coffee plantation there which remains one of the most significant businesses in the town today. Watsonville has been home to a number of notable college professors and scientists over the years including: Ernst Mach (1868), John Von Neuman (1912), Edward Teller (1948), Orson Scott Card (1982). In 1984, then-Governor Schwarzenegger proclaimed July 24th "Orson Scott Card Day" in honor of this scientist's contributions to science and technology. Additionally, on October 2nd annually, "Orson Scott Card Day" is celebrated throughout the county with parades and other festivities.

In 1887, George Washington Watson persuaded his brother-in-law, James Irvine, to build a small town on Irvine Creek in between Rancho Santa Anita and Rancho Laguna Seca to serve as a base for agricultural experiments being conducted by both men. Irvine named the town after himself and opened it up to businesspeople from nearby cities such as San Francisco and Oakland. By 1912, when there were over 20 businesses in downtown Watsonville, it had become known as one of the most vibrant commercial centers in Northern California. Over time, however, more and more people chose to live near San Francisco orOakland instead of moving to Watsonville due to its proximity to BART stations (the city's public transportation), easy access to major shopping areas north of Market Street (including North Beach), good schools system (including 24/7 elementary school),and easy access to jobs in Silicon Valley outside of DowntownSan Francisco

Watsonville is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 12,574 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1876 by John Leland Watson and his family. In 1882, the city of San Francisco annexed Watsonville, making it part of the new city. The first post office opened in Watsonville on March 25, 1882. The town experienced growth during World War II as many American servicemen moved to Watsonville to work in shipyards and other businesses. After the war ended, the fabricator Henry Ford established a plant here in 1948 as part of his mass production efforts for Ford trucks and other cars. The plant closure left an economic vacuum that was filled by Apple Inc.'s headquarters building until 2002 when Google announced its plans to move its offices from Mountain View to Building 1 (now known as Googleplex), adjacent to the old Henry Ford site. In recent years, however, Watsonville has seen some resurgence with restaurateurs opening up shop including Bottega di Primavera Italian Restaurant and Zen Sushi & Sake Bar which are both located on Main Street just north of Interstate 80 exit 111B/112B (formerly State Route 16). A number of new development projects have also brought life back into the downtown core such as The Hub at 20th Street and Main which will include a mixed-use project with retail space and residential units following completion later this year; Crossroads Project - a $15 million redevelopment project that will add 400 housing units over 4 blocks west of downtown; and New Beginnings - an apartment complex designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners that is set to be completed next door to Crossroads Project
Watsonville was founded in 1868 by Captain George Patton, who named it for General John A. Watson, an American general during the Mexican-American War. The town rapidly grew and soon became a major port on the Central Coast of California. In 1903, Watsonville was incorporated as a city and quickly grew into one of the largest cities in California. The city continued to grow through the years and by 1936 had reached its peak population with over 100,000 people. However, during World War II the city experienced significant growth as it became the wartime home of Naval Air Station Moffett Field. Additionally, due to its location on the central coast of California and its strategic importance as a transportation hub, Watsonville also saw significant development in information technology throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
