Watsonville is a small town in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first people to live in Watsonville were the Ohlone Lenape and their descendants who had inhabited the area for centuries before that. In 1836, Mission San Jose de Asís was founded by Father Junipero Serra and his Franciscan Order and it became one of the most important missions in Alta California. In 1851, California's first constitution was ratified here with land grants from Mexican president José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla. In 1863, when American troops sacked Mexico City during the Tejon Rebellion, they burned down many of downtown Mexico City's churches including Mission San José de Asís which stands today as a historic landmark within the town limits of Watsonville. The post office opened on November 15th, 1868. After serving for several years until December 25th 1870 due to open enrollment problems caused by Santa Clara County's crowded infrastructure at that time, it moved to its current location at 403 Main Street where it has remained ever since. In 1928 a new elementary school (later renamed after then-Governor Ronald Reagan) was built adjacent to what is now Middle School Road in what is now called "Old Town". That same year also saw construction begin on what would become later known as "the High Water Mark" - an earthfill filled reservoir which serviced local homes and businesses for over 50 years until its replacement in 2007 by Mountain View Reservoir which also provides drinking water for much of Silicon Valley
