Watsonville has a long and proud military history. The city was founded in 1853 by Captain James Wills and his wife, Mary. The first post office in the town was established in 1856. In 1861, the United States Army occupied Watsonville during the California Gold Rush. The army built Fort Point on the waterfront and garrisoned it for eight years. In 1871, the fort was sold to the city and renamed City Hall. In 1886, Watsonville became an incorporated town under state law. On October 24 of that year, a detachment of American soldiers from Company C, Sixth Infantry Battalion under command of Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter attacked Mexican forces at Rancho Pajaro near present-day San Rafael while on their way to reinforce General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s army besieging Monterey. The Mexicans routed the Americans with little loss on their part and Jenkins’ report concludes that “the engagement resulted satisfactorily to our side” (Jenkins 1912). On November 5th of that year, a detachment of American soldiers from Company K, Seventh Infantry Battalion under command of Major Edward Haggerty attacked Mexican forces at Rancho Adobe del Rey about 12 miles south-southwest of San Francisco Bay Area (Kleberg 1912). It is said that one man died as a result of this engagement; however more recent research suggests that this may have been an accidental death (Fletcher 1984). A plaque commemorates this event at Adobe del Rey today. On December 14th 1907 Alameda County purchased 2 acres adjacent to present-day Civic Center lot from José Gomez for $1,000USD Gomez donated land to build what would become known as Alameda County Courthouse which opened in 1909 Alameda County Museum opened in 1913 In 1916 Mayor Macdonald erected a monument inscribed "To Our honored Veteran Soldiers who fought for us 1915 - 1917" located between First Street & Mission Boulevard

Watsonville was founded in 1847 by Captain George Goodwin and his wife Priscilla. The area that is now Watsonville was part of the Mexican Rancho San Pablo, which was granted to Spanish settlers Francisco Alvarado and Antonio Lopez on November 3, 1777. In 1847, two brothers named John and James Watson purchased the Rancho San Pablo from Antonio Lopez. The Watsons wereirst men born in California to English parents who had settled in Sonoma County in 1822. They operated a cattle ranch there until their death in 1888. In 1881, the town of Watsonville was incorporated as a result of an act of Congress which approved the incorporation of towns within the United States when California became a state. The town site including present-day Watsonville was annexed by Santa Clara County on March 7, 1886. The first post office at Watsonville opened on April 1, 1848. It was renamed Stevensburg on December 12, 1850 after Captains George Goodwin (1807-1849) and Isaac Stevens (1792-1875). On May 6, 1889, it changed its name to Watsonville due to Mayor Henson's recommendation and approval following his demonstration of mail service between the town and Healdsburg over horseback riding during a public meeting held at Pioneer Hall in downtown Watsonville. A new post office building been built on State Street in downtown Watsonville between 1925-1927 according to local history book "The History Of Santa Clara County" written by Don Armstrong Bourke with photographs taken by him during that time period
