The California National Guard was first organized on November 6, 1846. The guard was set up to protect the state of California from Invasion by Mexico. The first national guard unit was created in Watsonville, California. It was called the 1st Infantry Battalion and it served until 1861. In 1862, the battalion were transferred to the 2nd Infantry Battalion and served until 1865. The battalion then disbanded in 1865 and its members were absorbed into other units within the army. However, the idea of a national guard unit remained and on October 15th, 1913, a bill was passed that authorized establishment of anational guard regiment in Californiaproviding for an annual appropriation of $5,000. On December 5th, 1913, the Regimental Armory at Fort Mason became operational and on February 14th 1914the 1st Regiment Californian National Guard arrived in San Francisco as part of World War I. They served with distinction throughout World War I including taking part in offensives along the Mexican border and fighting at Taos Pass where they helped turn back Mexican forces led by General Pancho Villa. The first REGULAR ARMY NATIONAL GUARD unit stationed here in Watsonville was activated on September 17th 1952 under command of Colonel Harry Wachtel with Men from Placer County! A second REGULAR ARMY NATIONAL GUARD unit located here also activation took place on September 17th 1952 under command of Colonel Harry Wachtel with Men from Marin County!Bothregiments have continued deployment here ever since! This has been an important aspect not only because these units are there when needed but also because both regiments have had continuity between them creating a bond that goes back many years! These units play an important role not only here but also all over America providing security during times of emergency or unrest!
