In 1907, entrepreneur Arnold Armitage opened his own grocery store at 103rd Avenue and First Street which became one of the most successful grocery stores in California during that time period with an annual sales volume of $1 million! Today'sArnold Armitage Museum features artifacts from his Store including an 1886 four-cylinder engine that ran on coal! A fire destroyed much of downtown business activity early on Christmas morning 1922 when a spark from a faulty candle caused an uncontrolled gas explosion that destroyed buildings adjacent to the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot across First Street from Armitage's store! rebuilt immediately with new brick exterior and shop windowsills replaced with replicas of originals! The prompt response by city firefighters who quickly extinguished the flames resulted in widespread publicity for both their department and city government which helped spur investment into downtown businesses throughout much ofSan Francisco during those years
