Watsonville is an unincorporated community located in Monterey County, California. It is located on the west side of San Francisco Bay, about halfway between downtown San Francisco and Alameda. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The first people to live here were the Ohlone Indians who occupied this area for several centuries. In 1851, George Edmunds opened a store in what is now called Main Street. By 1860, there were twenty-six residents in Watsonville. By 1870, there were ninety-eight people living here. The town was first named Dayton after General Lucius Noyes Dayton who served as Army Commander during the Mexican–American War and later became Governor of California. The town got its name from Captain John Sutter's discovery of gold near by in 1849 which led to many people coming to find it out and make a fortune! The post office was established at what is now known as Main Street in 1851, and served until 1862 when it moved to nearby Telegraph Hill because of the large number of new settlers arriving here! In 1865, local merchants formed a company with the goal of establishing agrarian society that would provide goods and services to their customers on a subsidized basis instead of just selling them things! They succeeded and soon had four stores and fifty employees! Reverend James Mapes officiated at services held each week at First Presbyterian Church from 1865 until his death in 1886 then Revs Ayer & Goodspeed took over for two years before Rev Wm Randolph came into office as pastor from 1888 until his death also in 1888 (he replaced Rev Mapes). They started having weekly services back at First Presbyterian Church starting on Wednesday evenings around 1830 or so but stopped due to lack of funding but they left some beautiful stained glass windows behind that remain today inside/outside First Presbyterian Church! Reverend James Mapes' tomb can be seen on one side across from where Pastor Goodspeed's grave is located on the other side up High Stairs (near Hawkins Hall). There are also small stones next to both graves that say "Reverend James Mapes" one above Priestly’s Grave (and slightly below Thomas’ Grave) while another stone says “Ayer & Goodspeed” next to him (and slightly above Thomas’ Grave). This church still stands today although not currently used for services as most churches have been replaced since World War II by larger buildings which are closer to military bases etc... . . . . .
