In 1916, they started selling coffee from a small roastery on First Street. The business grew and by 1922, they had a café and two stores. In 1925, they opened a bakery which became a popular spot for gift-giving ceremonies. In 1941, the Schaffer family sold the business to Harry Jaffe who ran it until 1984 when it was purchased by Bob Schieffer who kept it until 1991 when he sold it to Joe Garofalo who reopened it as The Roastery on Main Street in 1992.
Watsonville is a town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 25,813 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest town in Santa Clara County and the second-most populous city of its size. The name Watsonville comes from John A. Watson, a pioneer settler who purchased land here in 1853. Watsonville was founded on December 12, 1853 by John A. Watson and his wife Lillie Bemis Watson. The original settlement consisted of a few hundred acres (20 ha) of land east of San José and west of Bartlett Street. The first post office was established in 1854; it remained in operation until 1957. In 1860, Josephine married George Witherspoon and moved to Watsonville with him; they had two children there before moving to Pescadero in 1865. In 1862, Alice Morse became the first woman to serve as mayor of Santa Clara County when she won election as part of what would become known as the "Morse Revolution". She served two terms before losing her seat to Hiram Sibley during the November 6th general election that year; however she continued to be an important figure in local politics for many years thereafter. In 1872, US Congressman James Kieft (D-NY) ran for reelection against Hiram Sibley but lost because he couldn't raise enough money from within Santa Clara County to compete against his Republican opponent statewide; Kieft later said that "the fact that I could not get anyone together within this county'...was one reason why I lost." Watsonville is a small town located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It was founded in 1853 by John Waddell and named for his brother, Dr. Samuel Watson. The town rapidly grew as a result of its location on the Strait of Islay, which linked thetwo coasts of North America. The first post office was established in 1857, and within a few years, Watsonville had become one of the most important trading towns on the Peninsula. In 1876, it became an incorporated city with a population of around 30 people. By 1880, however, the population had plummeted to just 10 due to farming losses and economic depression caused by railroad strikes. In 1915-16, Watsonville went through an impressive redevelopment process that saw it become one of California's "rusty old cities." During this time period, many new businesses were built such as banks and hotels along with significant construction projects such as the creation of several parks and public squares. These changes helped to resurrect some local businesses which had been struggling during the Great Depression years before. After World War II ended in 1945, there were another waves of immigrants who arrived in Watsonville during that decade owing to its strategic location at the mouth of various trade routes connecting Asia with North America.
