The history of West Covina goes back to 1871 when two small villages were amalgamated into one larger community called Covina. In 1952, due to census growth rates in southern California combined with an increasing demand for housing within the city limits, Covina voted to secede from Los Angeles County and establish itself as an independent municipality. Today, West Covina remains one of Southern California's most vibrant cities with significant cultural attractions including several museums and galleries as well as three professional sports teams - the Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Lakers (NBA) and Chargers (AFC).

West Covina is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 606 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "West Covina" was given to the town by John Wesley West in 1887 after his rancho (now the city) was burned by Mexicans who were seeking revenge for his cattle raids against their villages near Mexicali. The first settlers in what would become West Covina arrived between 1847 and 1850 when gold seekers prospected in what is now eastern Riverside County. A post office called Covina was established in December 1849, but no resident moved into it until late 1860, when John Wetherbee opened a grocery store on Main Street and became its first mayor. In 1871, a group of businessmen purchased parts of what is now Banning from José Altuve and founded Banning Mines & Smelters Co., which still operates as acompany today with assets of $2 billion USD. In 1892, Banning voters passed an ordinance establishing a school district that included West Covina. The city annexation took place on April 3rd, 1898(). The community grew rapidly due to new housing developments such as Loyola Gardens and North Park Boulevard which were built during the1920s and 1930s respectively; however most residents left for more developed areas such as Beverly Hills or Inglewood during this time period because they believed that those areas had better schools and more opportunities for leisure activities than their hometown did. However despite these departures many families continued to live in West Covina through high school graduationuations and into their late 30s-early 40s until they too left for other places like Carson City or Redding during the 1970s when those towns began experiencing rapid growth rates. This trend seemingly stopped around 1980 when all High Schools within sight closed down including South Park Elementary School located just east of town center on University Avenue which served mainly adults working in nearby businesses while children living within walking distance to schools received free public education from local private schools thanks to Proposition 22 funding streamlining public education within California since 1966).
