Coffee has been around in California for centuries, and West Covina is one of the oldest towns in the state. In 1824, Spanish conquistador Juan Bautista Carrillo founded what would become West Covina. The town was named for him, and it grew rapidly thanks to its location at the mouth of the Santa Susana River. In 1868, Antonio Beltran opened a store in West Covina that became one of the first coffee stores in California. Beltran was later joined by his brother-in-law Manuel Perez and their father-in-law Don Francisco de la Cruz to form the Perez Brothers Coffee Company. Over time, other business families began to open their own coffee stores in West Covina as well. In 1915, Zenon Gomez started his own grocery store in West Covina which eventually became a megastore known statewide for its expansive selection of local produce andourmet foods. Gomez is also considered to be one of the earliest restaurateurs in Los Angeles County when he opened his first restaurant called La Hacienda de Zenon Gomez on Lankershim Boulevard near Hollywood Boulevard on May 20th, 1915. The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout World War I and into Prohibition era; during ProhibitionWest Covina even thrived with its thriving black market trade in illicit contraband coffee beans The town's fortunes changed after prohibition ended however with increased competition from nearby cities such as LA and San Diego which had much larger industrial bases During this time many businesses closed down or moved out of town due to difficult economic conditions including high taxes, limited resources, fire risk, etc However some notable businesses that remain include: Zenon Gomez Grocery Store (now defunct), Gonzales Insurance Agency (closed 1980s), First National Bank (closed 1990s), Pritchett's Bakery (closed 1992) After prohibition many small family owned shops closed up shop making way for large corporate chains like Safeway who bought most all these once independent businesses
West Covina, California is an incorporated town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 111,853 at the 2010 census. It is located east of downtown Los Angeles and south of the city limits of Pasadena. The area that would become West Covina was first settled by the Tongva people in 1769. A mission was established there in 1821 and named San Gabriel Mission after St. George, protector of cattle herds on the Santa Monica Mountains. In 1881, a group of settlers led by James Waugh purchased Rancho Santa Anita from José María Cámpora for $2 million. The land became known as "Waugh's Ranch" because its original owner was British-born Sir John Waugh who also founded Wacoaland near Tucson, Arizona in 1847 and died there in 1865. In 1888, when Southern Pacific Railroad began construction through what is now Compton Hills and Watts to get to Los Angeles Harbor, some farmers near West Covina offered to sell their lot on which they had been living since before railroads had come through the area. When railway workers stopped at their farms for lunch one day late in 1888, they found that all but six families were away celebrating Thanksgiving with their pastor who lived nearby at Mount Carmel Baptist Church; all but two homes had been destroyed by fire during past harvest celebrations1 . Upon learning about this incident railroad executives ordered Southern Pacific not to build any more tracks through these areas so that local farmers could keep growing crops and harvesting them themselves2 . Although several preliminary plans did not include anything nearer than Compton Hills or Watts3 , Southern Pacific finally selected a track running northeast (along present-day La Brea Avenue) through what are now Midway Park and West Covina4 to build its line between Long Beach and downtown Los Angeles5 ; while other lines passed just north of today's community6 . As soon as Southern Pacific completed its line west of Midway Park it sold most of the land around it - including what would become West Covina - back to the original farm owners7 . The townsite formed when parts of Orange County were annexed intoLos Angeles County on April 1, 19078 ; however until 1912 many residents continued calling themselves "Eastwest" or "Covina." On July 16th 1912 voters approved incorporation as a town9 ; however until 1915 it functioned more as an unincorporated community with no government services provided10 . On October 14th 1915 Voters passed proposition #192 giving them control over education within town limits11 ; this gave rise to EastWest High School12 which opened for instruction on November 15th 191613 . Although much has changed since then (the adjacent communities have experienced large growth rates), aspects such as EastWest's status as a school district14 have remained relatively unchanged15 : currently students from throughout southeastern Los Angeles attend classes at EastWest16 . On January 1st 2020 West Covina officially became part of the City Of Industry under Measure R17 ; while still maintaining certain rights & privileges associated with being an unincorporated community18 ? although annexation has resulted in increased infrastructure development & streetlighting along Main Street19 😜

West Covina is located on the south side of South Pasadena and about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The area that now makes up West Covina was first inhabited by the Tongva people in 1847. A mission called Rancho Santa Anita was built in 1849 and later became part of what is now Pasadena. In 1862, Southern Pacific Railway built a line from Pasadena to Long Beach, bringing settlers and jobs to the area. WhenLOS ANGELES COUNTY BEgan FORMING IN 1893, WEST COVINA WAS INCLUDED IN THE NEW AREA THAT WAS CREATED FOR THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES. In 1905, West Covina became an independent city and annexed portions of Norwalk and Lynwood. Today's west side of South Pasadena began as a rancho community named Rancho La Brea which was purchased by Mexican immigrant Antonio Rivera in 1884. Rivera donated land for a school and public square on what is now Olive Way near Western Avenue. He also founded Winnetka Park which still exists today as one of Los Angeles' most popular park areas with its tree-lined streets and close-to-the-city feel
West Covina (formerly part of the city of Angels) was founded in 1873 by John S. Pemberton and his wife, Anna Maria. The community developed rapidly due to its location near the railroad and other businesses. In 1916, the City of West Covina approved annexation by the city of Los Angeles, which increased population growth in West Covina. The first post office opened in 1918, and a telephone system was installed in 1922.
