West Covina, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 109,827 as of the 2010 census. West Covina is located in the northwest corner of Los Angeles County and is bordered by Bell Gardens to the east, Brentwood to the north, Puente Hills to the west and West Covina Hills to the south. It covers an area of 382 square miles (1,205 square km). The name "Covina" comes from Spanish words meaning "plain." The first Europeans to visit what is now Covina were Spaniards looking for a route between San Diego and Mexico City. Before 1850 there was little habitation in or around today's Covina; it was part of Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given out in 1835 to José Garza de la Torre. In 1851-1852 Captain James Kapp surveyed Lavender Hill Road which led from Pasadena down into present-day Covina; he named this road after his friend and business associate George Wetherbee who lived on nearby Mount Randalls at that time. In 1857 entrepreneur Hiram Sibley founded Sibley's Mill on what is now called Vine Street about two blocks east of Pico Boulevard - one of Sibley's earliest businesses. By 1860s many small farmers had established themselves around Pico Boulevard with fruit orchards and gardens being typical sights. On November 2nd 1870 voters approved a charter for the city limits – making it one of only five cities in Los Angeles County not granted a charter until after annexation by LA in 1888. On January 1st 1890 John Broughton acquired 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of Pico Boulevard adjacent to present day Calvary Cemetery - thus becoming founder/owner of Broughtonowne Farms Estates which included land where town center currently stands – forming today's western border along Chavez Ravine with West Valley City on its eastern edge.
