The Marines of the 2nd Marine Regiment, deployed in support of Operation Neptune's Spear, left their homes and families back home for months at a time to fight in Afghanistan. The Marines have always been an extremely accepting people, and tradition has followed their military culture. In 1886, the first Marine Regiment was raised in San Francisco Bay Area and soon after, Marines were being sent to war in France. One of the earliest examples of Marines giving back is when Sgt. John Daugherty gave a Christmas present to his commanding officer on December 7th, 1892. It was also the first time that Marines had ever traveled outside of California Island Naval Station located in western Puget Sound. Daugherty's gift was something special as it included 6 rifles along with ammunition and an extra barrel for each rifle so that they could be used while on duty ashore during naval operations against Hawaiian islands which began on January 8th 1893. Since then, marines have contributed greatly to our Armed Forces by providing their time, energy and expertise whenever needed across many different countries including Iraq and Afghanistan where they have played critical roles in saving countless lives both on land and sea. Some of the most memorable gifts that marines have given include: Aboard USS Tripoli (LPH-8) during Operation Neptune's Spear; A $10 million donation from Apple Inc.; The original UH-1Y Venom helicopter donated by Boeing Co.; The largest contribution made by any individual organization to date - $50 million from Google Incorporated; As part of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom - more than 5 tons of humanitarian aid delivered through cargo planes exclusively destined for Baghdad; And finally - The massive 11 foot bronze statue dedicated at Camp Pendleton Hawaii which features retired Sergeant First Class Donnie "Moe" Smith who served as Commandant USMC from 1986 until his retirement in 2013
