West Covina, California is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 93,839 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Carson City and also one of the fastest-growing cities in Southern California. The first post office for West Covina was established on October 15, 1887. The name may be derived from "Westerly" (a small town near Pasadena), which was once part of what became Covina Village. In 1907, Western Electric Manufacturing Company founded its new plant in West Covina to produce electricians' tools and equipment. Over time, other companies followed suit including Hildebrandt Corporation (now Panasonic) and Bell Telephone Company in 1959; Searle Electric Products Co., Inc., Mattel Electronics Corporation and Micromax Technology Group later merged to form Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.. In 1981, Western Electric sold its assets to Philips Electronics NV for $2 billion. On November 3rd, 1987 West Covina's first municipal election took place with 54% of the vote cast with Mayor Harry Burt receiving 45% of the total votes while City Councilmember John Fenton received 33%. When it came to race for councilmembers however it would be an all-party affair as no Democrat ran against Burt or Fenton who instead served out their terms unopposed until 2003 when they were replaced by Norma Chavez and Jerry Sanders respectively. When Hollywood Studios began operations in 1923 they used a large lot next door to Warner Bros.' studios where they built their own set design house along with many other buildings over time such as their now known East Coast headquarters building which still stands today next to Highland Avenue on Hollywood Boulevard near Regency Drive NW across from CBS Television Distribution Headquarters
West Covina was founded in 1871 by George and Ann White. The town began as a small farming community, with only two stores and a few homes. By the late 1800s, the population had grown to around 100 residents. In 1906, West Covina incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth in trade and industry. By 1920, the city had over 1,000 residents and was home to six factories including Don Mills Paper Company, Electro-Motive Diesel Corporation, Westinghouse Electric Company, Waco Printing Workshops and dozens of other businesses. During World War II, the city was heavily bombed with little damage done to its buildings but its infrastructure suffered significant damage which delayed reconstruction for many years afterwards.During the 1960s-70s there was a large push for development within West Covina with plans for new shopping malls and apartments being developed throughout the downtown CBD area but these projects never came to fruition due to economic conditions at that time. In recent years however redevelopment has been increasing in popularity around Broadwalk Boulevard which is now known as one of West Covina's most vibrant neighbourhoods boasting fresh restaurants and bars opening up every month along with some excellent old warehouses conversion into apartment complexes
