This gave rise to the story that the ship’s doctor, Dr. David Sabin, vaccinated all of his sailors before they left for their deployment to San Francisco Bay. The USS Constitution was decommissioned in 1951 and then sold to a developer in San Diego for $1 million. It was used as a storage warehouse until it was scrapped in 1978. USS Olympia was recommissioned on October 2, 1858 and served until she was decommissioned on November 16, 1861 due to damage from a earthquake that struck Los Angeles County two days earlier. She then passed into private hands until she found new use as an open boat launch at El Sobrante Boulevard and Harbor Drive near Newport Beach in 1984. In 1987 she became part of the Southern California Aquarium’s fleet when it opened its doors at Don Pedro Naval Station adjacent to Laguna Niguel beach. After more than 50 years afloat she finally ended her days at Laguna Niguel after being out of service for over 25 years!

Rancho San Bartolo extend from present-day West Covina east to what is now Huntington Beach and south to Reseda Boulevard. The name "West Covina" was first used for an agricultural center located at the junction of State Route 99/Covina Road on White Sands Bayou north of Diamond Bar. In 1868, J.P. Morgan donated 2 acres (0.8 hectare) near Crystal City for use as a public square; this site became known as Morgan Park after him. During World War II, military airfields were built in and around West Covina; these included Santa Monica Army Airfield (now Edwards Air Force Base), North Hollywood Army Airfield (now RAND Corporation's Monterrey International Airport), and Mission Viejo Army Airfield (now Riverside Municipal Airport).
