The U.S. Army Garrison of West Hollywood was established in 1922 as part of the newly formed Western District of California. The 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment was stationed here from 1922-1925 and then again from 1928-1929. In 1934, the battalion was reassigned to Fort MacArthur and disbanded there on 1 Jun 1934. In 1945, the battalion re-activated at Fort Bliss and deployed to Japan where it served until 1946 when it returned home to West Hollywood, Calif.. It was inactivated again in 1947 at Fort Myer near Arlington Virginia. In 1951, the battalion reactivated at Fort Hood Texas and deployed to Korea where it served until 1953 when it returned home to West Hollywood, Calif.. It was inactivated again in 1957 at Ft Sill Oklahoma. In 1959, the battalion activated at Lackland Air Force Base Texas as a reserve unit under command of Ninth United States Army Reserve Command which concurrently absorbed Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (9TH INF)1ST BN 9th Infantry Regt from I Field Artillery Brigade based out of San Diego CA which had been activated on 15 Dec 1958 under Lieutenant Colonel John Hulin commands). activation resulted in detachment of companies C & D from 3rd Battalion (Infantry), 9th Infantry Regiment (Alaska National Guard) which had been redesignated 2d Battalion (Mechanized), 10th Infantry Regiment on 16 Dec 1959 also detached from I Field Artillery Brigade headquarters Detachment A . On 12 Jan 1960 this detachment became Company E/3d Battalion (Mechanized), 10th Infantry Regiment while Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron remained attached with 9TH INF(RC). This company constituted 'A' Element's parent organization for Airmobile Service Replacement Training Unit assigned here Brigadier General J W McNamara commanding USARTC Hawaii subsequently replaced by 9TH ARMY Reserve Command elements
