West Hollywood is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 992 as of January 2010. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Downtown Los Angeles and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in California. The first coffee shop opened its doors on July 4th, 1971 in what is now occupied by the West Hollywood Cafe. The shop was located at 5557 Melrose Avenue and sold coffee beans directly to customers from their roasting facility. Over time, various co-owners and employees of the West Hollywood Cafe have helped create an iconic past and present presence within the coffee industry in Los Angeles County. These individuals include: Gordon Biersch (founder), Donatella Zandile Dlamini (co-founder & CEO), Tony Rupa (founder & CTO), Leslie Katz (owner/co-owner of Mr. Chow restaurant) and Mike Krieger (owner/director). In early 2007, Mr. Chow announced that they would be closing their doors for good at the end of that year due to low sales but reopened under new ownership soon afterwards with a focus on supporting local businesses and donating profits back into local libraries throughout Southern California. This event marked a turning point for West Hollywood as it became home to both one of LA's oldest functioning coffee shops as well as one which embraced sustainability practices including recycling aluminum cans into cups!
