It became known as West Hollywood because of its location on a hilly area near Western Avenue and Pico Boulevard. In 1907, movie mogul RKO bought the land that makes up today's West Hollywood from J.P. Morgan for $4 million dollars which later increased to $30 million dollars when other interests joined in the deal including producer Harry Cohn and his wife Joan Crawford. In 1949, director Alfred Hitchcock moved into one of his old movie theaters in what is now called "The Highlands" district and began making movies there until his death in 1980 disagreements over control led to Hitchcock's widow finishing most of his films at Columbia Pictures where she still works to this day as an executive producer-director with her son Adam Busch Productions..
