In 1870, John C. Fremont discovered gold at Sutter's Mill on Mount Wilson Boulevard east of Mulholland Drive and North Figueroa Street in what is now West Hollywood. This led to immense wealth for those who located there - including founder of Paramount Pictures Harry Cohn - and quickly made West Hollywood one of America's leading movie centers.
