The first people to settle in what is now West Hollywood were Spanish traders and missionaries working along the coast of South America during Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1847, James Kettner founded what is now called Kettner’s Garden Spot on Signal Hill overlooking downtown Los Angeles. This was followed by other early settlers including John Coyle who settled around 1889 near present day Springam Street and Ocean Boulevard. These pioneers laid down the groundwork for modern-day West Hollywood. In 1907, movie producer Harry Lasky purchased land south of Vinegar Hill Road which he named Hollywood Heights after his favorite actor/director Cecil Burt Reynolds (of The Jazz Singer and High Society). As more people came to live in Hollywood, they required new housing developments which led to the establishment of such famed streets as Beverly Hills Boulevard, North Highland Avenue, Western Ave., Vinegar Hill Road and Hope Valley Drive within what is now West Hollywood proper. On December 15, 1920 officers from Pasadena police department raided a party held at 20 Estero Rd., Suite 410 by members of The Millionaires' Club meeting to raise money for World War I soldiers; this event came to be known as "The Night Of Too Many Stars."
