In 1984, West Sacramento became an independent city when it separated from Orinda following a vote by the City Council with 30% opposed by Orinda residents who wanted to keep their town merged into the larger city. City staff conducted an analysis that showed that merging would have resulted in increased taxes for both cities while also reducing services available to citizens in each municipality which would have negative economic effects on both cities combined; this recommendation was rejected by voters who chose not to merger into one larger municipality despite overwhelming support from council members at that time. Today, West Sacramento offers its residents diverse businesses opportunities including several health care providers including UnitedHealthcare as well as restaurants such as Taco Bell and Sonic Drive In; excellent schools such as John Marshall High School which has been named after America's first black president; Stonington Elementary School which serves students from preK through 8th grade; and East Side Christian School which provides education for children living below poverty lines statewide .
