The area now known as West Sacramento was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 1600s. In 1769, two brothers named Juan and Francisco de la Garza founded a small town called Rancho Rinconada on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1836 it had a population of over 100 people. However, because of its location along the river, Rancho Rinconada was vulnerable to attack by vandals and robbers. In 1846, José Joaquín Baca purchased the ranch from its original owners, and with help from his friend and mentor Antonio López de Santa Anna, Baca began to build a military fortification around Rancho Rinconada. This fortification soon became known as La Fortaleza del Sacramento, or The Fortress of the Sacramento River. In 1850, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and Mexican nationals started moving into California. Because of this change in government infrastructure, La Fortaleza del Sacramento became vulnerable to attack by bandits and thieves again. In 1861,Mexican General Tomás Cámpora ordered his army to attack La Fortaleza del Sacramento; however, due to lack of food supplies and superior American forces (the Ulysses S Grant Army), Cámpora was forced to retreat after only three days' fight. In 1872-1873 Chico County was created out of parts of Alameda County that were annexed into Los Angeles County; therefore part of what is now West Sacramento belonged to Chico County until it was given back to Los Angeles County in 1911. The city's first mayor was Félix González (1911-1913). It lost its charter status as a city in 1933 but regained it in 1954 when West Sacramento annexed El Dorado Hills City limits which also included most of east Contra Costa County including Menlo Park
