West Sacramento, California ( located in the San Joaquin Valley of California) is a town and city in Sacramento County, California. The population was 35,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as West Sacramento was first occupied by the Pomo people in the 18th century. The first white settlement in what is now West Sacramento occurred in 1853 when James Sutherlin and his brother built a small cabin on Beale Street near present day Power Avenue. In 1865, John Butterfield founded Californian Land and Town Company with land west of US Route 50 between Fruitvale and Roseville to provide grazing for local livestock. This company acquired additional land east of US Route 50 until it had all but surrounded by townships within modern-day Sacramento County. Butterfield's company sold its holdings to Mexican settlers who arrived during the American Civil War under General Antonio López de Santa Anna because they were concerned about any United States military presence within their territory. At that time there were no cities or settlements within present day West Sacramento except for two scattered villages which sat along both banks of the river: Arden and Ione on opposite sides of what is now First Street Bridge over Elk Grove Boulevard; these villages had been established as early as 1849 when Mormon missionaries traveled through this area preaching Christianity to Native Americans living among them. When gold was discovered in western Nevada during the 1860s, many miners from eastern Oregon decided to head westward into what would become Sierra Nevada foothills where gold could be found at an ever-increasing rate due to new discovery methods including assaying water derived from shale outcrops nearby. By 1870 some comprising most or all of today's City Limits including Arden, Ione, East Sac (later incorporated into West Sacrament), North Sac (later incorporated into Roseville), South Sac (later incorporated into EastSac), Asker Park (now part of Butte), parts of Pleasanton, Dixon Heights and portions of Elk Grove formed a nucleus around which began organized development northward along Interstate 5 between Midtown San Francisco and Andalusia before arriving at Uptown Oakland via Interstate 580 late in that decade primarily contributing directly to downtown redevelopment beginning just after World War II although various smaller communities continued developing throughout this period largely unnoticed save for occasional periodic cleanups schedulely performed by volunteer firefighters adjacent to commercial areas generally considered unacceptable conditions prompting increasingly vigorous neighborhood effort culminating finally with full community engagement plan revision following fire damage assessed subsequent year resulting in establishment/promotion/adoption/implementation Community Development Services District prior thereto).
