Among these pioneers were George Custer and his troop leader’s Pony Express rider Brigham Young who founded Utah’s first capital city Provo on January 16th 1863 (later renamed Sandy) about 30 miles northeast of West Sacramentans along Cottonwood Creek just north of present day Interstate 880 With so much activity taking place near him (and allwestward looking prospectors filling up his coffers), Brigham Young decided it would make sense for Provo to have its own courthouse which he built on First Street between Main and Second Streets in 1868 This building still stands today as one half block south of Third Street across from Valley View Cemetery!
