West Sacramento is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Sacramento and flows into the Sacramento River to the south. The first permanent settler in what became West Sacramento was George Hearn, who bought land from the Native American Kootenai tribe in 1838. He named his location after St. Peters Parish (now Orleans Parish) in Louisiana where he had been born two years earlier. In 1846, William Hutton founded what would become West Sacramento as a ranching town on Rancho San Jacinto near present-day East Capitol Street and North First Street just north of Central Avenue. The town grew rapidly with new settlers arriving by wagon train during the 1850s and 1860s; by 1870, it had a population of 1,200 people and was incorporated as a city on November 3 that year. In 1916, Mayor John Sollenberger persuaded then Governor Hiram Johnson to annex WestSacramento toSacramento because of its growing size and potential for industry development.
