West Sacramento was founded on April 12, 1851 by brothers John C. Moore and James W. Moore as a rancho named Rancho Real de los Angeles de la Salinas (Real Rancho of Los Angeles from California). The original settlers were Mexican American farmers who arrived from central Mexico during the period of Mexican rule over California. The first post office in West Sacramento opened in 1853. At that time, there were only three settlers living in what would become West Sacramento: John C., James W., and their brother Moses Hahn (whose family name means "Hancock"). In 1857, following Gold Rush Fever which decimated most of California's population, James W.Moore sold his share in Rancho Real to entrepreneur Doniphan Forston for $1,000 plus interest because he thought it would be easier to get goods to market if he could purchase them cheaper than through contract with suppliers back then In 1865 when West Sacramentans ratified an election ordinance giving voting access to all citizens regardless of race or color they had not yet achieved full civil rights under United States law until 1965 On November 3rd 1870 George Washington Carver was born into one of the richest families east of the Mississippi River at San Francisco Bayou Lafitte near present day Richmond CA

By 1870, the population of Sacramento had grown to over 100,000 people and things were only starting to heat up. On July 4th, 1871, the first dedicated “Sacramento State Historic Park” was created on what is now West Sacramento Street. It would be another 25 years before a permanent home for the park was built. In 1906, the state legislature designated West Sacramento as an “township” within Sacramento County and it became one of the most populous areas in that county.
