West Sacramento is a city in California, United States. The population was 27,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as West Sacramento was first called Calaveras County by the Native Americans. In 1873, when most of what is now California was acquired by Mexico through the Alta California Treaty, Calaveras County became part of newly created San Joaquin County. Rancho San Joaquin and Rancho Benicia were two early ranches in this region. The area that would become West Sacramento was first settled by Mormons from Utah in 1887. They named their new community after Bishop George Tilton Smith of Los Angeles who had also founded Salt Lake City and served as governor of Utah from 1884 to 1889. In 1905, a group of farmers led by Royall Clements bought 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast of today's downtown for $5 per acre (2,500 m²). This land included parts of present-day West Sacramento and East Sacramental Towers neighborhoods which are still considered Muslim and Latino strongholds respectively today because it has supported these communities since before they were officially designated minority enclaves in 1978. In 1960, development began on what would be the largest single project ever undertaken in Wuggett Township when developer Julius Rosenblatt purchased 3 miles (5 km) east of town on sections lost to fire during an agricultural firefighting campaign three years earlier. What would become home to Wuggett Township and many other villages within its boundaries were platted out with wide streets, high school buildings (now known as Northridge High School), churches/synagogues/temples/apartments for workers at nearby Carlsbad Naval Air Station (CARLsAD), a movie theater/amusement park complete with rides and games for children on one side and housing developments on the other side immediately adjacent to Interstate 5 southbound off I-80 near Dry Creek Road
