West Sacramento is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,829 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Contra Costa County and the most populous city within the San Francisco Bay Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now West Sacramento was made on May 20, 1846 by 50 men from Stockton, California under the leadership of Captain George Hearn. They founded a town called "Sacramento" on land that had been donated by John Templeton. The post office at this location was established on October 14, 1850 and named for Bishop Samuel Biddle who served as its first postmaster. In 1855, Sacramento became an incorporated town with a population of 10 people; it changed its name to West Sacramento on November 3, 1865 after incorporation by vote of its citizens. In 1873–74 Barnard College acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of Rancho El Cascabel land east of downtown west of Interstate 80 for $5 per acre ($10 per hectare). In 1888–89 Waddell Bros., general mercantile interests who owned much of Contra Costa County inventory and real estate along I-80 east to Antioch and south to Danville sold their interest in Rancho El Cascabel to James Mapes for $15 per acre ($30 per hectare). Mapes later donated additional grazing land northward from I-80 that formed part of Rancho Moraga which he purchased from José Gomez de la Torre y Pavón in 1892 for $25 per acre (400 per hectare). On December 12, 1912 Hacienda La Esperanza Ramirez became part of West Sacramento when ranch hands working there joined with other Mexican workers at Chico State Agricultural College to form what would become known as "La Esperanza college". In 1916 Mayor Manuel Ramos donated 160 acres (60 hectares) north and northeast of downtown near Interstate 680 to establish what would become known as University Park; it had no immediate impact because World War I interrupted enrollment at Chico State until 1933 when it reopened after being closed during World War II due to military enlistment restrictions.
