The United States Military has been present in Westminster, California since 1853. The first military presence in the town was when American Commodore Matthew Perry landed on the shores of Monterey Bay with his fleet to seek revenge for Mexico's invasion of California. In 1853, the U.S. Navy also made an appearance when Commodore John D. Sloat set sail from Monterey Harbor for Stockton, California with a squadron of warships. At that time, Stockton was a small town located about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and it was not until 1862 that the city proper was established by Leland Stanford and others who purchased land east of the main square. The arrival of soldiers brought new life to the town and soon there were barracks and stores available to accommodate them. In 1865, General George Custer arrived in western California as part of Union Army forces commanded by Sherman during his march through what is now Riverside County. After engaging Confederate forces at Battle Creek on October 16, 1865, General Custer ordered his men into Philadelphia without waiting for news from headquarters back in Illinois (where he had been billeted). This action marks one of history's most dramatic moments as it became clear that General Sherman would rather fight than retreat after achieving such great success against such powerful foes. Eventually over 2 million Americans served in World War I and World War II; many more served in Vietnam after America intervened there in 1970-1973 as part of Nixon's "war on drugs." As recently as 1967-1968 there were approximately 1,000 active duty soldiers stationed at Fort Irwin off Corona Boulevard between Ontario Boulevard and San Jacinto Boulevard; however this base closed permanently upon cessation of hostilities with North Vietnam less than two years later following Operation Rolling Thunder which targeted all major north Vietnamese population centers including Hanoi). Today only an Armed Forces Museum remains open at this location showcasing military hardware dating back to World War II through today’s conflicts around the world!

The Westminster Army and Navy Club was founded in 1885 by Captain John B. McKenzie and Major James H. Gunn as a military organization for the town of Westminster, California. The club soon became a veterans' auxiliary and supported many local patriotic events throughout the years. In 1922, the club merged with The American Legion to form The American Legion-Westminster District. The club continued its support of patriotic events until it disbanded in 1969.
