Westminster is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 8,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. Westminster was founded in 1853 as an agricultural community on the east side of San Rafael Creek by John Wesley Alford and James Waddell. The creek later became known as Sloat Boulevard. In 1885, William Marriott purchased 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land south of Westminster along Sloat Boulevard, which he named Marriott Ranch after himself and his brother-in-law Sir Thomas Marriott who had donated 1 million dollars to begin the Santa Clara Valley Railroad. In 1916, he sold that ranch to Earl Warren for $1 million and developed it into what is now downtown Westminster with its grand courthouse and many other civic institutions including the University of California at Berkeley campus across from it. A few years later, in 1928, General Electric built its first plant in Westminster when they bought 2 blocks of land north of Sloat Boulevard for $14 million.
