Westminster, California is a small city in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was founded in 1911 by veterans of World War I, who named it in honor of the then-newly created British Parliament. The population was 8,000 as of 2010. Westminster is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and its residents are composed of people from around the world. The city has been called "the melting pot" because so many different cultures have come together here over the years. The history of Westminster can be traced back to 1853, when Mormon pioneers arrived here on horseback after trekking across Nevada and Arizona. They named their new settlement Sutter's Fort after General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry brigade that had fought at Battle Of Little Bighorn against Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors two years earlier. After more than a century of settlement, no permanent town developed within the boundaries given to it by Captain John Drakeford, who surveyed these lands for Rancho San Diego Californios (now part of Riverside County). However, during which time numerous miners and prospectors Casualty Creek near present-day Anza Borrego Springs were located just inside present-day Westminster limits on what became known as Ranchero Road; alluvial gold mining continued until about 1907 with claims extending well into present day Elk Grove Village and beyond. In 1912, American combat troops returning from World War I were quartered at Sutter's Fort while they awaited discharge eastward following armistice agreements ending hostilities on October 11th that year. It is with great sadness that we report the passing of one of our most loved and esteemed members of our community, Westminster Mayor, Gary Scheetz. Gary was a long-standing member of the board of directors for the City of Westminster Foundation and served as its executive director from 2001 until his retirement in February 2016. He was also a trustee for The Golden Gate Bridge Conservancy. Gary leaves behind a legacy of service to Westminster and to California. As mayor, he spearheaded important city initiatives such as planning for an ambitious new city center development; creating new affordable housing ordinances; increasing accessibility to public transportation; implementing a citywide recycling program; and increasing funding for parks, libraries, and other important municipal services. In addition, he was instrumental in developing key partnerships within the city government with neighboring municipalities such as San Francisco and Daly City. Gary’s passion for community engagement was clear from his earliest days in office. He worked tirelessly to build strong relationships with both local businesses and civic groups across the city – building trust so that each party could work together safely and efficiently on behalf of all those who mattered to him. His tireless dedication to social justice ensured that all communities within Westminster felt included in his vision for the municipality – no matter their size or background. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him – including his wife Becky ( whom he married in 2000), children Aidan (20) & Abbey (18), grandchildren Wyatt (5) & Lillie (3), brothers Tomás (47) & Peter (46), sisters Teresa(54) & Vicki(51).
