Westminster was founded on July 29, 1853 by James Irvine and his wife Lucy Irvine. At first it was named Independenceville but then changed to Westminster because that is what James Irvine's father had called it when he first saw it from a distance. On December 6, 1861, the City of Westminster incorporated as a town under the name of Los Angeles County and moved from its original location at Tenth Avenue and Hill Street to its present site at 5th Street and Union Avenue. The land that now makes up Westminster was originally part of Janesville Ranch which was purchased by George Hearst in 1867 while he still owned half of what would eventually become Los Angeles County. Hearst had hoped to build an agricultural center on this land and sell off the adjacent hills but he never did anything with it other than lease it out for grazing purposes until his death in 1926. After Hearst's death some developers began buying up bits and piecesofJanesville Ranch so they could build more subdivisions on top of them until finally they bought all the land together and built what we now know as downtown Los Angeles without even thinking about giving away any property back to Janesville Ranch or giving anyone else access to their lands whatsoever! In fact, there are only a few buildings remaining from when Downtown Los Angeles was actually built- most notably One Beale Street which used to be home to The Standard Oil Company before they moved out in 1914- all other properties have either been replaced or demolished since then! Nowadays, much like many other American Cities, Westminster has seen itself go through some tough times throughout its history including several periods where it experienced great economic activity followed by tough times afterwards. However, despite these challenges – both recent & past – everything seems to have started coming back around after something went wrong during one particular period (e.g., post-recession) which made people start paying attention again!
