The battalion was called to active duty and deploying to Guantanamo Bay Cuba for two years. In 1955, Marines donated a USS Constitution Museum ship from Manila Philippines to Westminster Naval Shipyard in support of Project Sailfish which was aimed at increasing maritime research and technology within the United States Navy. In 1957, they donated another USS Constitution Museum ship from Manila Philippines to HMS Queen Elizabeth Dock in Portsmouth England as part of British Shipbuilding Corporation’s assistance program for newly formed NATO members. This event marked the beginning of a long standing relationship between marines and both countries. In 1990, when it was decided that Marine Barracks would be located near Westminster Municipal Airport, Marines donated an airfield hangar which would serve as their new headquarters until 2000. As part of this donation, marines also erected a large hangar adjacent to Marine Barracks which still stands today. Today, marine troops are once again deployed throughout our country performing various military tasks including combat deployments overseas or homeland security operations domestically. The Christmas Tree ornament: From 1951-1957, Marines erected a Christmas tree at Quantico Naval Base in Virginia as part of their annual Christmas celebration. A camera for every Marine: In 1984, the Marine Corps began giving away digital cameras as part of its "Cameras for All" promotion. To date, more than 10,000 cameras have been distributed across the country! 4. A guitar for every marine: In 2007, marines stationed in Okinawa started selling guitars online during National Guitar Day (a celebration each year that marks Japan's national musical festival).To date, over 100 guitars have been sold!

The town was founded by pioneers in 1881 and named for Prince of Wales, Edward VII of England. The first post office opened in 1883. In 1889, Westminster became an incorporated city and added to the U.S. Census Bureau's list of "Cities with Aged 25 or Older". In 1923 it was renamed after King George V of Britain and changed its name again to Westminster on July 2 of that year in commemoration of his coronation as king at Windsor Castle.
In 1951, the original downtown area around Government House square was destroyed by fire; however, thanks to donations from local residents and businesses over a period of years the rebuilt district has since become one of the most vibrant areas in Westminster with new restaurants and businesses opening up all month long!
