Today, NAS Westminster is one of only two schools of its kind in the United States Navy responsible for educating midshipmen (juniors) on how to serve their country as commissioned officers or petty officers ready for shore duty ashore or afloat. Midshipmen from all branches of service attend NAS Westminster’s courses; including submariners and helicopter pilots from both U.S. Coast Guard detachments operating out of NAS San Diego and NAS Point Loma California; as well as individuals taking courses offered by other services such as Army Aviation Cadets at Fort Benning Georgia). A variety of lessons are taught throughout each day: how to be an effective member of your squadron/unit/shipboard command team; proper language use when interacting with superiors ashore or afloat; basic lifesaving skills essential aboard any vessel manned or unmanned including those using certain advanced technologies like autonomous underwater vehicles (UUVs); first responder tactics while embarked on USS Harry S Truman (CVN 72) during Exercise Northern Guardian 2009 off Scotland’s coast; ship-to-shore firefighting operations during Operation Neptune’s Spear2009 off Somalia…the list goes on! Today, there are more than 3200 active duty members assigned to NAS Westminster who offer coursework leading up to commissioning into either an accredited corps such as Sailors First Class (E-4), Petty Officer Third Class (P3), Sailor Second Class (E2), Seaman First Class (E1), Private Military Company Enlisted Apprentice aka “PMC” member (PMC-EA)….and beyond! As we enter into another decademark for our nation's naval forces - anchoring proudly alongside American shores - it is important that we remember what made these men & women so special - their dedication & commitment to selfless service across oceans – whether it was during World War II when they served aboard ships converted into submarines or today when they deployaushipside!
