The Whittier Air Force Base Museum preserves and displays the history of the United States Air Force in Whittier, California. The museum is located on Ellington Road inWhittier. The museum was opened in 1979 and encompasses a collection of over 1,500 items from the USAF archives. The history of the USAF begins with World War I when America entered into conflict with Great Britain. American pilots were needed to fight against British bombers and fighters. The first air race was held between America and Germany in 1916 which resulted in America winning the war. In 1918, General Billy Mitchell founded what would become known as flying services at Whittier AFB. Mitchell's goal was to provide transportation for American soldiers during World War I while also providing training for future military leaders. After World War II, the USAF grew rapidly due to its involvement in Korea, Vietnam, and other conflicts throughout the world. In 1957, President Dwight D Eisenhower signed legislation establishing NASA which would lead to further achievements by the USAF such as landing men on moon soil; Cold War missile tests; and Operation Neptune’s Spear which led to US victory over North Vietnam. The base saw increased activity during this time as it became home to both jet aircraft manufacturing plants (Northrop Grumman) and an active Training Command (Eagle Talon). However, during 9/11 attacks large portions of Air Force facilities were destroyed including wings at Whittier AFB including Saab AB-9X trainer planes being used by wing commanders for aerial refueling tours just prior to take off from Ellington AFB en route back home after visiting a allied airbase outside Japan airspace! These examples make up only a fraction of WWII vintage USAF equipment that has been preserved at various locations across America since then!

Whittier is a city located in Alameda County, California. The population was 98,076 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in California and second-largest city in San Francisco County. The original inhabitants of Whittier were Native Americans who called it Wintu (wintu means "place where they hunt"). In 1868, the town was founded by John Sutter on land granted him by Mexican President Manuel Lopez de Santa Anna. The name "Whittier" originated from an erroneous assumption made by Sutter that the nearby Mount Whitney would be named after him. A local resident, Hiram J. Chalfant, suggested adding "-er" to distinguish Whittier from other settlements in Alameda County and to avoid confusion with Groveland - which had also been founded earlier that year. The first post office opened in 1870 and was known as Menlo Park until 1875 when it changed its name to Whittier because of the high declared altitude ofMount Whitney at then 7,411 feet (2,711 m). In 1876, gold was discovered at Sierra Nevada National Monument so a new post office named Sierra City was established at an elevation of 5 miles (8 km) above sea level on what is now White Sands Road east of downtown Whittier. In 1904–05 there was a large fire that destroyed most of downtown and killed many people including Mayor James Fenton and his brother George Fenton; this event became known as the Great Fire of 1903. On October 25th 1905 judge William McKinleyHotel burned down just before midnight while guests were sleeping; this event became known as the Nightingale Hotel fire. Deputy Sheriff Charles Beaumont died after being shot by outlaws while trying to arrest them near Huntington Beach on November 12th 1886 while serving a search warrant for their hideout; this event becameknown as Rancho San Bernardino shootout or Bodega shootout because two deputies were killed and four sheriffs were wounded during that day's gun battle at Bodega ranch south of San Bernardino
The city of Whittier was founded in 1866 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law, Hiram S. Babcock. The City of Whittier was incorporated on December 14, 1879. In 1915, the name of the City was changed to Pasadena because of the nearby city's annexation into Pasadena County.
