The Whittier Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first regiment raised in Whittier was the 4th Cavalry, which was organized on December 12, 1851. From its inception, the 4th Cavalry fought in many local and national wars including the American Civil War. The unit disbanded in 1865 but re-formed two years later as part of the California National Guard. In 1898, additional units were raised for service in Mexico during the Spanish-American War. These units served honorably until 1903 when they were folded into Regular Army forces under General John Pershing. Whittier’s military presence didn’t stop there though; from 1916 to 1919, Whittier hosted an American Red Cross wartime relief station called “The House on Elm Street” which provided safe haven for refugees fleeing Germany during World War I. The house also acted as a canteen and hospital for soldiers and civilians who needed help getting through the war. After World War II ended, many of these same troops returned home while others were stationed overseas at various bases throughout Asia and Europe. In 1947, the first regular army brigade (the 3rd Infantry Brigade) was activated here in Whittier; this brigade would become known as “The Big Three” because it oversaw three infantry divisions (3rd Infantry Division (Alameda), 1st Infantry Division (Los Angeles), and 2nd Infantry Division (San Diego)) that served within U.S Army District 10 headquartered in Los Angeles County until its dissolution in 1991 under then Lieutenant Colonel Rick Majerus command). Whittier, California is a small town located in Southern California. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley metropolitan statistical area. The name "Whittier" was given to the town by General Antonio LEnriquez on July 22, 1887 while he was commanding a brigade in the Mexican-American War. He named it after his friend and fellow general John C Whittier who had died two years earlier during that conflict. One of the first things General Antonio LEnriquez did when he got control of Whittier was to start building a schoolhouse and public square which are still in use today. He also started planting orchards and gardens around town which continue to be well-manicured today. During World War II, Whittier served as an airfield for Fighter Squadron No. 20 (F-5E) flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes frombase Downey California until its closure in 1945. After the war, many factories closed down but some such as Alcoa continued producing products here including aluminum cans, car parts and appliances until 1984 when they moved their plant to Mexico City. In recent years there have been efforts made to revive old businesses such as The Woolen Mill which used to produce woolen items like sweaters and hats before moving into more modern production facilities over time ago now known as ABC Supply Store Incorporated with its own store front on Main Street next door to Albertsons Pharmacy across the street back then known simply as Woolen Mill Hardware where you could buy everything from hammers to screws alloys through out their numerous departments starting with notions upstairs followed by clothing downstairs at least until they closed them down around 2006 due mainly to lack of customers however some former employees still keep an eye out for potential openings so please e-mail me if you know anything about this defunct business

Whittier, California is a town in northern San Joaquin County, California. The population was 9,917 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Simi Hills desert and has a land area of only 2 square miles. The name "Whittier" comes from nearby Mount Whitney and was given to the community by General John C. Fremont in 1851 as an alternative to more populous Sacramento because there were no natural resources or towns within easy reach of Whittier. The first post office opened in 1854, and Whittier became a city on January 1, 1907. In 1915 it annexed part of Banning and received annexation from Madera on December 3 that year. In 1923, Whittier incorporated as a state constitutional convention town with a population of just over 100 citizens; it had been proposed as early as 1912 but never ratified due to lack of support from other towns in the county. In 1959 it became an unincorporated community again after being abolished by the state legislature following passage of Proposition 13 (a measure limiting property taxes). On July 14, 1990, wildfires destroyed most of downtown Whittier and forced residents out into the surrounding hills for days on end; fortunately few people were hurt or lost any homes or businesses in what was one of Californias worst fires ever.

Fremont explored California and discovered the Gabriel Lakes region, which would soon become the Whittier Valley.
