In 1915, the Coast Guard purchased its first vessel- the Cutter Norelco- which served as their primary patrol boat for many years. In 1923, the Coast Guard commissioned its first helicopter- Calliope- which became an important tool for coastal patrols and search and rescue operations. Whittier, California is a small city in Southern California. It is located about an hour west of Los Angeles and about two hours east of San Francisco. The population was 31,815 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.81 square miles (4 km2), all of it land. The first permanent settlement in Whittier occurred in 1887 when John Abehney arrived with his family from Illinois. He erected a cabin on what is now State Route 27 and began farming land which he named "Wadsworth". By 1912, there were over 100 people living in Whittier including many farmers, merchants, mechanics and builders who contributed to its development as a small town and agricultural center during the early years of twentieth century America. During World War II, Whittier played host to both American military personnel and their Japanese allies who had been quartered there following the war's end. Whittier is a town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It was established by Captain George Whittier in 1868 and named for him. The population was 20,000 at the 2010 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Whittier were the Tongva people who lived on Mission Bayou. Captain George Whittier came to the area in 1852 and founded a trading post on the bayou called Rancho San Pedro del Rey. In 1864, he donated the land that makes up today's Whittier to the city of Los Angeles.
Whittier was founded in 1887 by James Fenton and John H. Sloat, both of whom were immigrants from Ireland. The town experienced rapid growth after it was designated as a city in 1907. In 1958, Whittier became the first California city to have an automatic water filtration system.
