In 1957, Harry George opened an illegal daycare center called Harry George's Cafeteria on Main Street near Third Street which served hot coffee all morning until lunchtime for childrenminders working during school hours then played inside for free throughout the afternoon while their parents shopped downtown or took a break for dinner around 1 p.m.. It was here that Norma Jean King discovered her first cup of roasting coffee when she stopped by with her daughter Joan after school one day while she was working at Harry George's Cafe as part of her job description as a minder...Joan reported back to mother that "Harry gave me some good French beanresso." Mrs. King purchased two pounds of superior blend ground coffee at this time which she stored away to use later that year when she started publicly running for office as a Democrat against incumbent President Dwight Eisenhower... In 1884, John Sutter opened a sawmill in what is now Whittier and began making furniture from local black oak. The mill continued to operate into the 20th century but production stopped in 1946. In 1892, William Randolph Hearst purchased land in what is now Whittier for $5 per acre and began developing it into a community with several blocks of homes and an elementary school (now called Whittier Middle School). He named the community after his home state of Virginia, where he had settled before moving to America to become a newspaper tycoon. Hearst's development brought new life to Whittier; by 1920, there were over 100 businesses lining Main Street. Over time, most of these businesses closed or became darlings of bankruptcy due to their location or competition from more established communities nearby such as Pasadena and Arroyo Hills. However, some locals kept their stores open until they went out of business; for example, Jack Nicholson's mom used to buy groceries here until she could find better prices elsewhere. When Hollywood moved into Culver City in the 1940s and 50s, many residents fled to Whittier because it was still relatively affordable then compared to other areas around Los Angeles County. During World War II, many American soldiers who had fought in Europe served as interpreters for Japanese military units stationed here from 1942 until 1946. One such soldier was Major John Tilton MacArthur who helped develop the local economy by developing Whittier as a center for Japan-related business transactions during World War II. MacArthur also built several homes here including his ranch house which still stands today on North Capitol Avenue adjacent to Los Angeles State University campus; this house has been used as a museum since 1951 and currently houses MacArthur Museum of Japanese American History & Culture.
