The town of Whittier was established in 1909 by entrepreneur and real estate developer Rufus King and his wife Jennie Livingston King. In 1926, they founded the coffee company La Folletta Coffee & Tea Company. The first coffee shop in Whittier opened on March 5, 1927 as the Café de la Lune by Italian immigrants Giovanni and Rosa Colombo. On October 12, 1927, the first Starbucks store opened in Whittier storefront #1123A with co-founder Howard Schultz serving Americano coffee until 1978 when it moved to its current location at 7031 E Imperial Highway. The cafe closed its doors on December 15th 1984 after 35 years of business. In 1971, La Folletta merged with two other small coffee companies to become Peet's Coffee & Tea Corporation which continues to operate today as one of America's leading café franchisees with over 100 locations across the US and Canada.

Whittier was founded in 1884 by attorney and politician George Whittier and his wife, Eliza Cunningham Whittier. The town was named after John Muir, an American author who lived in nearby Yosemite National Park. The first store in the town opened on Main Street in 1885. In 1886, the Whittiers donated land to the city of Los Angeles for a new city park. In 1907, Whittier became a charter member of the California State Senate. It was here that state senator Hiram Johnson helped pass California's first statewide climate change bill. In 1914, Whittier became the capital of Kings County when it was split from San Diego County. The Second World War brought large contributions from local businesses to the war effort. Paper products such as soap and cigarettes were produced in large quantities at whiter mills throughout California. After the war, many residents left for good because of high unemployment rates and low prices for housing or other goods outside of Los Angeles City Limits (LAC). However, some remained until 1984 when LAC officially dissolved due to population growth within its boundaries. Today, Whittier is a small town with a population of around 1,200 people that revolves around its two churches and three schools: Christ Lutheran School District #2; Sacred Heart Catholic School District #1; and Stonington Presbyterian School District No 5 which also provides daycare services for children up to 6 years old as well as private groups/svgs/events facilities including an indoor waterpark called Aqua Lagoon which opened in fall 2003 adjacent to Christ Lutheran School District 2 & 3's gymnasium
The first Europeans to visit Whittier were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his party of 15 in 1769. The area was first settled by the Tongva people, who built villages along the banks of the San Joaquin River. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1821, and Rancho Santa Fe y Costilla was granted to José María Cárdenas in 1846. In 1872, a group of Mormons from Salt Lake City led by Brigham Young arrived at Rancho Rinconada, which included parts of what is now Whittier. The town began developing as a agricultural center during the 19th century, with grain production becoming dominant in the early 20th century. By 1922,Whittier had a population of 3500 people. During World War II, Whittier became an important manufacturing center for munitions and aircraft parts. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and Whittier lost its status as an economic center.
