The Whittier Police Department has a rich history that goes back over 100 years. The department was founded in 1892 as the Town of Whittier Precinct No. 2 and soon grew to encompass the entire city of Whittier. In 1916, the department became an independent agency and began to issue its own police uniforms. In 1949, the Whittier Police Department merged with the Los Angeles Police Department to form one unified force. This merger created many new opportunities for cooperation between the two departments and led to increased training and equipment availability for both organizations. Whittier, California is a city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is the county seat of Orange County. The population was 2,495 at the 2010 census. Whittier is a city located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 26,822 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Inyo County and the second largest city in Mono County after San Bernardino. The name "Whittier" comes from Wacomunee, an Apache word meaning "place of plenty." The town was founded by Captain John Cushing with assistance from General James Longstreet in 1849 as a stop on their overland journey from Southern California to Arizona Territory. Captain Cushing's family had been among the original settlers of what is now Whittier. He named his new town after his maternal grandfather, David Wacoalumokuachuakaa (David Watkins), who had been one of the first white men to cross the Mojave Desert and settle near present-day Redding, California in 1827. At first, Whittier consisted only of some scattered adobe buildings near where downtown stands today. However, within two years there were more than a hundred inhabitants living in smallpox-infected tents on wharves along the riverbank north of town. In 1863–64 Whittier became part of Imperial Valley Union Station before being sold by Northern Pacific Railway to become part of Transcontinental Railroad's Western Division headquarters at Needles Junction about east of today's downtown area. During World War II it served as an Army Air Forces airfield for bombing raids over southern California and Nevada; during that time it also housed a detachment of Lend-Lease soldiers from Japan. After war ended Whittiere reverted back to its original status as a open-air trading post until 1951 when it became City Hall under Mayor Harry Eilers Jr.. One hundred years ago this week (August 15th), on that date President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address at Soldier Field south side Market Street in Chicago Tribune Square - just across street from then City Hall - making him leader of America’s northernmost state! Today’s large audience for world renown speeches and ceremonies provides an ideal opportunity for history students and others interested in our region’s rich cultural heritage to attend these events inside or outside City Hall – both before and after military parades take place nearby!
