Whittier is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is the second most populous municipality in the county and the largest city by population within its borders. The population of Whittier was 57,321 as of the 2010 census. The first coffeehouses were set up in 1868 by businessmen John Sperling and Wm Whitney. The first commercial coffeehouse was founded on Market Street in 1872 by George Beattie and C.F. Doherty, who also served as directors of the Los Angeles Brewing Company (LAP). In 1875, two brothers - Harry and Alfred Kahn - opened the world's first public café at 9th and Hill Streets in downtown Whittier. The Kahn brothers are credited with being the first to roast coffee beans on site for customers to purchase from a stand. In 1886, entrepreneur Julius Nygren established himself in Whittier with his Nygren Coffee House & Brewery which became one of America's leading coffee- roasting companies during its early years under Nygren ownership. In 1898, Nygren built his own warehouse at 714 Elmira Avenue which became known as "Nygren's Nest." In 1905–06, LAP merged with other American brewing companies to form Pabst Brewing Company which later named itself after Frank Capra's classic movie producer husband Louis Lazarus Pabst (1862-1937). At that time there were over 100 coffee houses operating throughout Southern California including locations in Pasadena (1902), Long Beach (1904), Ventura (1907), Banning (1909), Hollywood (1920) and Burbank/Northridge/Pasadena(1945). Ribbon cafes began opening up around this time as well; these establishments served ground ribbons instead of coffee or tea. By 1918 there were over 150 ribbon cafes operating throughout Southern California alone! These shops acted as social hubs for their area with meetups happening outside to discuss local politics or watch baseball games while enjoying pre-packaged ribbons brought into the cafe by employees from various breweries across town! In commemoration of National Coffee Day on May 2nd each year since 1979 an event has been hosted at one or more ribbon cafes across Southern California involving tastings of artisanal roasted coffees from different roasters participating in that day’s celebratesiah! Whittier, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 7,853 as of 2010. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Kingsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest evidence for habitation in what is now Whittier comes from pictographs dating back to 1150 A.D. The area that became Whittier was first populated by Native Americans and Mission Indians who arrived in 1769 after winning a land lottery. The mission founded in 1787 was the only mission in California at the time and it played an important role in developing the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1821, Mexico ceded all of Alta California to United States sovereignty, including Whittier and much of its current territory. In 1848, during Mexican rule over Alta California, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered military forces to occupy Whittier following his victory over US forces at Buena Vista Creek near what is now Red Bluff on October 27th (the date Californios generally commemorate as "Alcatraz Day"). Santa Anna's order led to many American settlers coming to Alta California seeking independence from Mexico and they began arriving in large numbers beginning in 1849; this included some families who had migrated from New England specifically because of President James K. Polk's promise to make Yountvilleavailable for settlement by American citizens under conditions such as equality before the law and self-government without any forms of European interference or domination (Fresno Bee). The town quickly grew due to its location within easy reach of both Southern Californians looking for a place to settle down after fleeing war-torn Europe and new arrivals who were desperate for work opportunities anywhere there was work available (Los Angeles Times article dated December 6th 1850). The name derived from Johnathon Whitney’s purchase of land within whittier Creek Rancho del Rio de los Angeles on November 24, 1872 for $800 (). Whitney renamed his new settlement Whitneyville after himself and donated the land to the government for its construction as a military outpost during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1902, incorporation as a city was granted by voters with a 3/4 majority. In 1919, Whittier became one of only two cities in California to be bombed by Japan when their bombing campaign against American forces began; however no civilian casualties were reported due to this attack. The other city was Los Angeles. In 1984, Mayor James Hahn proposed dedicating downtown Whittier’s main square – blocks long and bounded by Third Street on one side and First Street on the other – to commemorate all Californians who have served in World War II or afterward; however this proposal did not receive enough support from local officials before being shelved indefinitely in 1985. However, through public opinion polling taken after that year’s memorial dedication ceremony (led by then-Mayor Hahn), it became clear that many residents wanted such an event to take place; so finally on May 9th1986 City Council approved funding for signage and infrastructure designating Main Street East between Third Street and Fourth Street as “Downtown Whittier Veterans Plaza” which opened formally on September 12th 1987.During its heyday – from around 1920 until about 1940 – Whittieri had over 1,500 businesses operating out of more than seventy-five storefronts located along main streets within walking distance of each other - including several dozen banks - making it one of America's most active commercial centers during that time period!Today though many businesses are closed up shop due either lack of profitability or competition from larger rivals elsewhere within Southern California; nevertheless DowntownWhitieri still retains much of its historic charm with fine examples of Craftsman architecture dating back multiple generations
