Wildomar is a census-designated place in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first post office at Wildomar was established on November 7, 1868 by Hiram Sutter. The name "Wildomar" was given to the town by Captain John Fitch according to one source. According to another source it may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "wild grapes." In 1872, the town site was purchased by George Hearst for $2,500 and renamed Hearst Ranch after his friend and investor Samuel Morse Hearst. Hearst served as mayor from 1876 until his death in 1899. He left behind a legacy of building infrastructure in Wildomar including a water tower and schoolhouse which remain standing today. According to historian Don Armstrong, “Hearst's gift helped make Wildomar one of America's most important agricultural communities during its early years – even though he never personally owned any land within its boundaries." After Hearst's death, control of the ranch passed through three families before it finally came under full ownership by millionaire oilman Charles Gorman in 1928. Gorman turned it into an experimental farm research station that became known as UC Berkeley's Golden Gate Park in 1934; however some buildings still stand there today (like the old dairy). Gorman also donated much land for residential development but only began construction on what would become downtown Wildomar when World War II interrupted his plans due to munitions buildup nearby
Wildomar was founded in 1847 by brothers George and John Wildomar. The town is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, about northwest of San Francisco. The wildomar area had been designated as Mission Bay Reserve in 1846, and in 1852 it became part of the City of San Francisco. In 1865, Wildomar incorporated as a village. On September 30, 1870, Wildomar was moved to what is now known as the Sunset District of downtownSan Francisco after its incorporation into the city.
