Aker developed what is now Wildomar into an agricultural community with fruit orchards and cattle driven to market by wagonloads every day. Wildomar, California was first settled by the Garces in 1821. The name of the town is derived from a word meaning "wild olive" because of its high concentration of wild olives. In 1835, Wildomar was founded as a post office on the Rancho San Antonio de los Bajos Mexican land grant. On July 14, 1850, Wildomar became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with nearby Salinas and Placer City. The discovery of oil in 1942 led to rapid growth in the area and Wildomar became one of the most heavily developed communities in Southern California. During World War II, many local industries produced materials for military use including munitions plants and aircraft factories. The post-war boom ended when production switched from manufacturing to services such as health care and education.
