The Windsor, California Army deployed gift history began in the late 1800s when an American general and his regiment arrived in the town. The regiment was known as the California Battalion and was stationed at Fort Yuma. General Kearny founded this fort in 1852 to defend against Mexican attack. The battalion disbanded in 1857 but some of its members continued their service with the army until 1861 when they were mustered out. From 1861-1865, an army detachment stationed at Fort Yuma garrisoned a smallpox hospital. This hospital was used by both the U.S. military and civilian patients from Riverside County. In 1865, the detachment moved to Stockton where it served as a barracks for artillerymen until 1873 when it moved back to Yuma to become part of infantry brigade under First Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell attached to Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer’s command during his Indian War campaign against Sitting Bull’s Sioux nation. It was here that the battalion earned its name “The America” Battalion due to its American flag flown at all major events related to military operations within section 851 of Camp Sherman located on Folsom Street north of downtown Windsor (now Sutter Street). In 1881, Captain James Pemberton erected a large blacksmith shop on State Route 97 west of town square which became known as Battery Park Depot after Major General Nelson A Miles ordered artillery batteries placed there between December 17th and January 2nd, 1881 during Anglo-American bombardment of Mexico City following Mexico’s declaration of war against United States on February 14th earlier that year led by President Grover Cleveland (1892-1893) seeking revenge for years of economic humiliation inflicted upon America by Spain throughout her colonial era including California including what is now Orange County; however credit should go also unto Commodore Perry who had sailed into Mexican waters off Point Conception Bay on July 21st 1860 preceded by Ulysses S Grant who landed troops near Bakersfield 4 days later followed two days later by other top naval commanders Nimitz and Perry under orders from Secretary Stanton regarding San Francisco Bay area land grab reportedly accomplished via Lt Col Thomas Durant – one source claiming Commodore Perry actually landed about 20 miles south east of Bakersfield prior thereto thus leading up Naval Expedition discovered 3 weeks later March 26th 1863 US Navy ship USS Constitution moored about 5 miles south east La Jolla Cove southwest Of Point Conception Harbor entrance approximately 12 NM from present day Soquel Beach beach

The Windsor, CA Army Garrison Museum has a rich history dating back to 1894. The Hammonds opened the museum as the first military installation in California and served as a training ground for the California National Guard. In 1939, the Hammonds donated land to become what is now the Windsor Army Garrison Museum. In 1954, the United States Post Office moved from San Francisco to Windsor and began operating here. The Windsor garrison became home to America's first post office box. In 1978, Fort Irwin was transferred from San Diego County to Ventura County and the army garrison became part of that community. Today, we continue our tradition of providing visitors with an overview of our military history by exhibiting artifacts related to our service members and their families. We also offer educational programs on topics such as nuclear weapons and artillery systems used during World War II.

Windsor was founded by men from England in 1851 as a mission station on the San Joaquin River. The town grew rapidly due to its fertile soil and natural resources, and by 1870 it had a population of 5,000. In 1902, Windsor became an incorporated city. The town experienced some high-profile incidents during its history: In 1903, two gunmen killed five people and wounding thirteen others at the local high school; in 1916, three members of the Japanese immigrant family Obata were lynched outside the city limits; and in 1922, eighteen-year-old American World War I veteran Glen Campbell was fatally shot by anti-immigrant bigot Johnnie Ray inside city limits. However, these events did not have any lasting effects on Windsor's overall reputation or economic stability. In recent years, Windsor has been gradually losing its status as an important agricultural center and cultural hub for Southern California. However, there are still many reminders of its past including several Pioneer Courthouse Square buildings that remain standing and a number of antique shops scattered throughout the town.

In 1892, Windsor annexed part of neighboring Stockton and became one of California's first city-counties. It continued to grow throughout the 20th century, until it reached its peak as an incorporated municipality in 1960. Since then, Windsor has experienced consistent decline in population and municipal appropriations, culminating in its incorporation into San Joaquin County in 2014.
