The Windsor-Essex County Army National Guard Armory is a museum located in the town of Windsor, California, United States. It was opened in 1907 as the "National Armory and Military Museum" and became the "Army National Guard Armory" on October 1, 1958. The armory is open to the public from 9am to 5pm (closed Mondays) during regular museum hours, and from 10am to 4pm on special days. It also offers tours at 2 pm for those who are not able to visit during regular museum hours. The armory also has a gift shop where military items can be purchased or donated. The first armory in Windsor was built by Major General George Armstrong Custer with money given by local farmers. The armory was destroyed by fire in 1906 but was rebuilt within a year with funds provided by insurance companies. From 1916 until its closure in 1958, it housed the ammunition depot for both the county sheriff's department and the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department. The current armory was designed by architects Edward Laughlin and Harry Weisman and built using $2 million of federal government money that had been allocated for military construction following World War I. It replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed in a severe fire in 1905. The original design featured two stories with an attached garage on top that could house up to 25 cars at a time; however, because of its size it was never used as a gallery or storage facility. In 1957, when it became known as the Army National Guard Armory, it possessed only 715 guns which were stored inside three large buildings onsite: main building (now visitor center), ammunition depot (now closed), and barracks (now part of visitor center). Since 1987, when state law changed from male-to-female enrollment policy at all military branches' commands into an all-encompassing gender identity policy throughout all services including Army National Guard units under Corps of Engineers jurisdiction only, donations have poured into thearmory - often along with pieces of weaponry discarded due to their no longer being needed or obsolete equipment coming off mothballs languishing outsideWelcome back! It is located about an hour south of Sacramento and two hours north of San Francisco. Windsor's ZIP code is 95859. The town was founded in 1887 by American miners who came to the area following the Gold Rush. The first post office was established in 1888, and the first store opened in 1889. In 2012, Mayor Gimenez announced that he would run for re-election but changed his mind after becoming aware that Sheriff Jahnke had filed to run for another term without getting through the City Council's nomination process. In 2014, Mayor Gimenez announced that he would once again run for re-election but this time against incumbent sheriff Michael Jahnke who had been running unopposed since 2006 despite being reported to have over $100 million in assets including real estate holdings and investments outside of Windsor County.
