Windsor, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Windsor was founded in 1884 by John Gentry and his wife, Emma. The town is named after King Edward VII of England who donated land for the town. Windsor became a city in 1966 and has since lost its agricultural center to nearby Clovis and Madera, but it remains an important bedroom community for the Fresno metropolitan area. The history of Windsor begins with John Gentry who first arrived in 1884 from Kentucky with his family. He started a ranch on what is now the corner of Essex Street and Central Avenue in what is now downtown Windsor. In 1886, Gentry married Emma (née Smith). They moved to what is now east side streets near where Alice Hall School stands today before settling on a farm north of present-day downtown Windsor on which they built their first home – still standing today – known as “Gentry” House. In 1906, Gentry sold his farm to J C Hungerford who made it one of the largest cotton mills in central California and began manufacturing rural postal cards which are still popular today! From this success, hungerford decided to move production westward into new facilities at 95th Street and Elmira Avenue which he called “Millsville” after Millsboro, Delaware where he had grown up! The company grew rapidly until World War I when it stopped making postal cards because there was no demand for them due to wartime rationing! However, hungerford continued operations until his death in 1938! His son George took over management from him and ran the company until its sale to American Paper Products (AP) in 1970! AP introduced new marketing strategies including direct mail selling products such as postcards through local postmasters that helped revive interest in postal cards during the music era! Postcard production resumed again under new management beginning with Don Herrity starting operations at AP's old mill site near Clovis late in 1978; later that year AP merged with Allied Paper Products Incorporated (APP) forming America's First Pennant Company Limited!! The city of Windsor, California was founded in 1868 by James H. Morrison, a flour and feed manufacturer, and his wife Martha. The town grew rapidly due to the production of lumber and cotton in the surrounding area. By 1870, Windsor had a population of over 1,000 people and was incorporated as a city. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century thanks to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes that led to Central America and Mexico. Asiana Airlines located their first aircraft at Windsor Municipal Airport in 1958. In addition, Windsor became known for its exports of citrus fruit, potatoes, wine and other agricultural products. In the 1960s, Windsor faced strong competition from nearby Riverside because it was designated as an official “Center City” for both housing developments such as Riverside Village and Moraga Valley Mall while also providing services such as transportation (the first municipally-funded streetlights were installed in Windsor) libraries (built on land donated by Morrison), restaurants (such as Café de la Mer), health clinics ( constructed on donated land ),and schools ( built on money from state incentives ). However, despite these setbacks, Windsor continued to grow through new economic initiatives such as a tax increment financing program which gave residents access to extra dollars generated by new development within their municipality . In 2002–2003 Mayor John Shupe organized "a blitz" of events aimed at increasing tourism in the city including appearances by local celebrities , golf tournaments , food festivals ,and business meetings Despite this growth potential there have been some challenges faced by Windsor over recent years including budget deficits which have caused stagnation in service levels while crime rates have increased; however Mayor Shupe has responded with strategies like creating more jobs outside of the municipality through private industry partnerships or investments into renewable energy sources James H. Morrison arrived in 1868 after purchasing 640 acres near what is now downtown Riverside County from Governor Manuel Nieto for $5 per acre . From his initial purchase he developed what would become one of Northern California's most thriving lumber towns - producing wood for everything from homes to railroad ties . He soon partnered with fellow entrepreneur Luther Valentin who ran a sawmill along present day I-8 about two miles east of town limits With rapid growth came social unrest – especially among women who spent most days working outside or far away from home – leading Morrison to establish himself as something of an autocrat figurehead who could veto any ordinance proposed by his less powerful partners without warning them. This power dynamics would prove troublesome later on when Valentin ran into financial difficulties and left town; but they didn't stop Morrison from continuing to build roads, bridges and other infrastructure needed to support rapid growth throughout much of Southern California during this period. In 1872 Morrison sold his interest in the town to Valentine for $10 per acre ; but Valentine wasn't nearly so happy about being pulled outta action so quickly – setting up shop inside what is now downtown Riverside instead until he sold again two years later for $15 per acre . Afterward things began moving faster still – with Valentine opening another sawmill next door on present day State Street before expanding into real estate development around today's Civic Center/Mall complex ."
