Windsor, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Windsor first came to prominence as the site of the original Donner Party winter camp in 1846. The town was named for Captain John Fitch, who explored and surveyed the region during the 1850s. In 1875, it became part of Patuxent Valley when that portion of Kern County was organized. The primary industries in Windsor are agriculture and ranching. The town also has a significant amount of residential development, including a large number of multi-unit dwellings known as "condos." According to the United States Census Bureau, Windsor has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,362 people residing in Windsor; 536 households out of which 34% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 22%of all households were made up of individuals and 9% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2½ and the average family size was 3½. In terms of racial makeup (non-Hispanic), white (92%) outnumbered African American (6%), Native American (1%), Asian Pacific Islander (2%), Hispanic(7%). As well as English speakers making up over 60%, there are sizeable numbers from Spanish speaking backgrounds too: Latinos make up 26%. Windsor, California is located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Windsor is one of several towns and cities in Kern County. It is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set eyes on what is now Windsor were Explorers John Copley and Sebastian Vizcaino on January 24, 1777 when they observed a site called "Venice" from a hilltop near what is now downtown Bakersfield. They named it after their patron saint, Venice. A few days later, they arrived at another site they called "Pine Nut Hill", which still stands today just off U.S Route 99E between Bakersfield and Del Norte Counties north of Fresno. In 1858, General James Fenton discovered gold near present-day Crescent City while exploring for minerals in Kern County; this was the beginning of the Gold Rush in Kern County and led to the growth of Windsor as an agricultural center with mining operations starting shortly thereafter. In 1875, construction began on what would become known as the FIRST American Bridge over Sacramento River - now known as Interstate 5 - linking Bakersfield with Visalia via Shepherd Dam across the river; this bridge became one of America's most famed engineering feats and helped make Windsor a popular tourist destination for many years to come. During World War II, Windsor was home to more than 20 military sites including Camp Earthman (now Riverside), Camp Hansen (now Redding) and Fort Shafter (now Joshua Tree National Park). After hostilities ended in 1945, much of these sites were abandoned or used for storage until rapidly redeveloping areas replaced them within decades; however some remain active today including Camp Earthman which reopened as a park in 1998 after being closed for over 50 years due to vandalism by local students). As development intensified throughout Kern County during that time period there came a need for more housing options so early post-war town planning efforts brought about two developments - One centered around Winchester Boulevard known then as "Windsor Hills" while another adjacent to present day Riverside Avenue/Old Town Square known then as "Riverside". Today both are occupied by larger suburban developments belonging respectively to Sunland Village attorney office complex and Chatsworth Place Retirement Community

In 1875, it was renamed to West Sacramento because of the presence of Sacaton Valley oilfields. The city incorporated as a city in 1907 and changed its name to Windsor again in 1915 after World War I ended. It became an agricultural center during the early 20th century and experienced a boom in population during the 1930s with many people moving to California from other parts of the United States. However, when World War II began, Windsor lost its economic significance and declined rapidly until the late 1960s when new industry arrived such as paper mills and small businesses. The city has since revived but remains poor despite numerous efforts by local officials to improve public services such as education and infrastructure.
