The Marine Corps has been in operation since 1834. The first marines were sent to California as part of the U.S. occupation of that state following the Mexican-American War. In World War I, marines fought in France and Belgium before being sent to Mexico during the war as part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). From 1917-1920, marines fought in Italy and then Russia before returning home to barracks in San Diego County, CA on December 7, 1920. On October 14th, 1942, Marines from Company K1st Battalion deployed gift history to Windsor, California when they arrived at Naval Air Station Miramar with their P-38 Lightning fighter planes. The unit had just completed a six week deployment flying missions over Pearl Harbor and later operating from airfields throughout southern California including Big Sur and Santa Barbara. The gift was given by Captains William Henshaw (later Lt Colonel) and Harry Wetherbee (LtCol) to Mayor Edward Jett for his support of the United States Marines during World War II. The town of Windsor, California is located in the Imperial Valley of Baja California, about 240 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. Windsor was founded in 1851 by Capt. George Armstrong Windsor and his wife Elizabeth following the discovery of gold in Northern California. The first post office was established in 1857 and the first store opened that year. The town grew rapidly with a population of 30 residents in 1881 and 100 by 1898. It reached its peak population of 350 people in 1912 but declined thereafter due to a variety of factors including increased competition from other growing towns nearby, bad economy, and declines in mining activity. The last gold mine closed down near Windsor in 1965 leaving little impact on the town's development over the next few decades. However, over time there has been increasing interest in restoring or developing this historic community which has seen some revitalization efforts recently including a new shopping center, new housing projects, and an effort to bring back downtown Windsor as it once looked years ago before it was devastated by fire damage during the recent drought conditions.

The first Europeans to enter what is now Windsor occurred in 1777 when Captain John Donne and his men named it after the English county of Berkshire. The town was incorporated on May 12, 1851. It became a city on October 15, 1903.
